What is SSL and TLS

Secure Sockets Layer and its successor Transport Layer Security are cryptographic protocols that secure communications between your customer web browser and your server.

Every time someone opens your website (e.g. following the link or entering its address in Google Chrome), his/her web browser gets the IP-address of your server from DNS, builds TCP-connection and begins the conversation:

- Hello, 192.30.252.153 (appsitedown.com)! Let's proceed with encryption? I can do SSL/TLS.
- Me to! Here is my certificate! (* sends its certificate)
- Let's see... (* checks the certificate) It seems to be trusted and valid! ....0...s..&b0!../..4-W...7.Qf."......*._.G..,..e.w@*

Starting this moment all requests and data between visitor's web browser and your server are going to be encrypted.


So what's the problem?

SSL/TLS certificates expire. Soon or later.

SSL/TLS certificate is limited in time. You buy it from your domain name registrator or another provider (e.g. GoDaddy, Thawte, Verisign, Comodo, etc.) and need to pay for its prolongation periodically. If the payment is delayed (or forgot) the cert becomes invalid and you lose customer because of "Connection is not secure" or "Phishing attack" messages in his/her browser.

Notification before expiration
